Green smoothies are probably the most convenient way to consume whole bunch of nutrients, fast. As a plus, if you get the right balance of greens and fruit, they are also delicious. They make a great breakfast or snack on the run, and you cover all your macronutrient bases with this recipe. Recently, I have been using matcha, finely powdered green tea leaves. As well as adding an unusual but delicious ‘grassy’ flavor, one cup of matcha contains the antioxidants of 10 cups of regular brewed green tea. Just make sure you buy pure matcha, not a sweetened ‘mix’. Reported health benefits include:
- High in antioxidants including the powerful EGCg
- Boosts metabolism and burns calories
- Is rich in fiber, chlorophyll and vitamins
- Improves mood and aids in concentration
- Contains vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium
- Lowers cholesterol and blood sugar
This smoothie gets it’s sweetness from the banana and protein powder, and the creaminess from the avocado. Feel free to substitute the greens for whatever you have on hand. Some berries or mango are delicious inclusions too. Use a high-powered blender to ensure you don’t get a lumpy drink!
Ingredients:
1 frozen banana
1/2 avocado
1/2 Lebanese cucumbers, or two small cucumbers
2 handfuls of kale, chopped
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (Try SFH, True Nutrition NZ Grass-Fed Whey or Vega)
1 tsp matcha
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup almond/coconut milk
Method:
1. Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender and blend until smooth. Add a few ice cubes and blend if you want it really cold.
2. Serve immediately.
